Kickapoo District Pinewood Derby

On Saturday Feb. 20th, 2010, the Kickapoo District Pinewood Derby race will once again be held at the Heartland Mall in Early, Texas.  Every registered Cub Scout in the Council is eligible to enter this race. Registration will begin at 9:00 am and end at 10:00 am.   Judging for Best Design, Best Paint Job and Most Unusual will take place from 10:00 am to 10:15 am.   Winners will be announced prior to the start of the first race.   The races begin at 10:30 am with the Tigers first followed by the Wolves, Bears, and Webelos. An open class race will be held for parents and all cars not meeting the rule requirements (These cars will not be eligible for the Grand Champion Race). Awards will be handed out at the conclusion of each level race. All 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place winners will compete in the Grand Champion race to determine which four cars will represent the Kickapoo District in the Texas Trails Council Pinewood Derby Race at Camp Tonkawa in May 2010.  WHO:

TIGERS, WOLVES, BEARS, AND WEBELOS. Everyone may race in the District events, regardless of results on the unit level.

 

COST: 

Entry fee is $4.00 per car, payable at registration on event date.

 

REGISTRATION:

Opens at 9:00 am and closes at 10:00 am. Racing begins immediately after judging is completed (10:30am). Races for Grand Champion begin as soon as all Cub Scout division races have finished. You only need to arrive at the location and register your entry on-time the date of the event. Patches will be awarded to the first 75 scouts at the time their car is registered.  Pre-registration is not required.

 

PRIZES: 

Trophies will be presented in each division for the 4 fastest cars.  The 4 fastest cars from each Cub Scout division will compete in the Grand Championship Race. Medals will be awarded to the four fastest cars in the District. Cars will also be judged in the following categories: Most Unusual, Best Paint Job, and Best Design. You must register not later than 10:00 am to be eligible for these categories.

 RULES:  Previous year cars are not eligible to race. ALL RULES WILL BE STRICTLY FOLLOWED.

  • Cars may be made from official BSA kits. Cars may not weigh more than 5 ounces, may not be longer than 7 inches, or may not be wider than 2.75 inches (they may be lighter or shorter). Each Pack in the district will be provided with a car template guide for wheelbase and height.  Cars which do not match the template will be raced in the open category.  All cars will be weighed and inspected at check in. The check in scales weights is final.
  • The original wood block must show through on the vehicle’s underside. Judges may scrape the bottom to verify material used.
  • No loose materials of any kind are permitted on the vehicle. If an accessory falls off, it will not be reattached.
  • NO FULL AXLES ALLOWED. Wheel shape and/or structure MAY NOT be modified exempt to sand off the casting ridge. Wheel bearings, hubcaps, and bushings are prohibited.  Judges decisions are final.
  • No oil, grease, or silicone is allowed. Only dry powdered lubricant is allowed. You may not add additional lube after car is entered.
  • Scouts will be allowed to sit at the end of the track ONLY during the race of THEIR car. Unless prior arrangements are agreed to by race officials, each car must be accompanied by the youth. All spectators will be required to stay behind the race line or the race will be stopped.
  • The race format is best-finish. Each car will race three times (once in each lane) to determine cumulative standing. Only 1 vehicle per Scout can be registered and raced. A Scout may enter an additional car in the open class race. All cars start with noses even (no notches to gain advantage).
  • ALL JUDGES DECISIONS ARE FINAL

OPEN CLASS:    Anyone may register and race a car in the OPEN CLASS RACE.  Cars entered in the open class race do not have to conform to the above rules, may be cars from previous years, or a second car of a Scout registered in a Cub Scout Division Race. Cars registered in open class must not weigh more than 5ozs. Cars registered in the open class will not receive a patch.
